What percentage of drivers are uninsured?
In the United States, every state — with the exception of New Hampshire — requires that drivers of motor vehicles carry insurance, typically liability insurance. However, despite the laws on the books in 49 states, 13.8 percent of all motorists are uninsured, according to the most recent statistics from the Insurance Research Council.
On average, this means that one in every seven cars on the road is being driven by a motorist without insurance.
Among all the states requiring insurance, Massachusetts and Maine are tied at 4.0 percent for the lowest percentage of uninsured drivers. Mississippi leads the nation in uninsured drivers at 28 percent. In New Jersey, 11 percent of drivers do not carry insurance.
