If your work-related injury causes you to be absent from work, you may be eligible for temporary disability benefits through worker’s compensation insurance. In addition, you may qualify to receive other benefits regardless of time lost from work. In New Jersey, a person who suffered an injury at work has to be unable to work for seven days, including weekends and holidays, prior to receiving temporary disability benefits.

The benefits are retroactive to the date on which the worker was injured. It is not required that the days you missed from work were consecutive. Usually, you will start to receive disability benefits after two weeks have elapsed. If your employer postpones your claim for an excessively long time, such as more than 30 days, they may have to pay an extra 25 percent of the amount owed to you.

You do not need to be out of work for a minimum amount of time to receive medical benefits. You can file a claim and receive such benefits regardless of the length of time you were absent from work due to your injury.
